Please describe work, volunteer, or life experience that you have had that would prepare you for being a member of this commission. I have been a management consultant for most of my career. In this time, I have advised more than a dozen Fortune 500 organizations in areas of strategy and supporting operations. To this end, I have had the opportunity to lead a variety of teams to achieve strategic initiatives such as reducing costs and/or increasing revenues. I have an undergraduate degree in Finance and Marketing from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Harvard Business School. 2. What skills and abilities do you have that would be helpful in doing the work of this commission? 1. Teamwork 2. Leadership 3. Motivation 10 3. With what you know about the Mound area, what do you see as the three most significant issues this commission will need to address in the next two years? 1. Lack of interest among residents — Relative to other communities around Lake Minnetonka, I don't feel that Mound residents have the sense of dock ownership and commitment to ensure our community is a highly sought -after place to live 2. Untapped dock revenue — I understand the intent of the Commons program to provide lake access to the community but I believe that people that participate in the program should pay market rates for docks. I believe that the City of Mound is selling itself short with its fee structure. 3. Rip- rapping — The riprap of many commons areas is in very bad condition. However, it appears that the city does not have the funds to take care of the shoreline management expenses. I have ideas to solve all of these issues such that all parties are happy. 4. What one or two contributions do you think you would make, in the short term (first few months) and in the long term (after a year)? 1. Short-term — Optimize the fee structure and create a greater sense of accountability among residents 2. Long -term — Establish a compromise to improve the shoreline management and accountability . while ensuring proper lake access for the City's residents. 5. How did you hear about this vacancy: City notification 1. Please describe work, volunteer, or life experience that you have had that would prepare you for being a member of this commission. I have participated in docks and commons advisory panels since formulation of the special task force which looked at ways to change the docks and commons program to better serve all citizens. I believe the experience I have gained from my involvement in the docks and commons program provides me good insight to better serve mound citizens. 2. What skills and abilities do you have that would be helpful in doing the work of this commission? As an engineer by training I believe I am well suited to analyze problems objectively to come up with the best solution to problems. I also have a master in business administration which gives me the financial background to understand and advise on the financial matters facing the program. 14 3. With what you know about the Mound area, what do you see as the three most significant issues this commission will need to address in the next two years? • I believe the commission will be challenged to meet demands errands for the system. There is a long waiting list of people who would like to use this great resource in Mound. I also believe there will be significant challenges to maintain an affordable program for Mound citizens. I do not want to see the program become one that is only affordable for the most wealthy citizens in the community. 4. What one or two contributions do you think you would make, in the short term (first few months) and in the long term (after a year)? In the short term I think I can help transition the commission to the new format. The commission is likely to have several people with little or no experience with the program and would benefit from a person who understands what has worked in the past and what has not. 5, Please fully disclose any potential conflicts of interest you may have serving on this commission. • None I am aware of. Please describe work, volunteer, or life experience that you have had that would prepare you for being a member of this commission. My husband and I are 30 year residents of Mound. We have always had a dock through city permit. Seven years as non - abutters and 23 years as abutters. I'm a registered nurse and have worked for the state of Minnesota since 1981. I currently do auditing activities in nursing homes and licensing surveys in assisted living and home care agencies. 2. What skills and abilities do you have that would be helpful in doing the work of this commission? I'm very familiar with reading and interpreting statutes and rules. I have much experience in dealing with issues of compliance and non - compliance. I believe I have a great sense of fairness. I have much experience working in a group to come up with solutions and compromise. I have been on "both sides of the fence' over the years on issues with docks and the commons. 16 3. With what you know about the Mound area, this commission will need to address in the next two yet do you see as the three most significant issues maintaining the city dock program fairness to all residents keeping dock fees low 4. What one or two contributions do you think you would make, in the short term (first few months) and in the long term (after a year)? Help make sure the quality of the program is maintained while keeping costs to residents low. Improve the program, docks, shoreline etc. by managing the fund/budget. 5. Please fully disclose any potential conflicts of interest you may have serving on this commission. I don't feel I have any conflicts of interest. You can tell by my address that we were involved in the most recent commons /dock program legal issues with the city. RECEIVED FEB 2 6 2009 CITY OF MOUND How did you hear about this vacancy: Memorandum dated 17 February 2009 mailed by Mr. Fackler. 1. Please describe work, volunteer, or life experience that you have had that would prepare you for being a member of this commission. I have been a resident of Mound since 1994. I have also served for quite some time (1999?) on the steering committee for the Juvenile Diversion Program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. 2. What skills and abilities do you have that would be helpful in doing the work of this commission? I am an extremely analytical person who is a former professor at the University of Southern California; I would presume that analytical skills are valuable as you face the trade -offs among some of the competing interests that I suspect are present on a regular basis. 3. With what you know about the Mound area, what do you see as the three most significant issues this commission will need to address in the next two years? a) Likely increased demand for dock spaces from new residents. b) Integration of the work of this commission with the downtown vision project and goals of providing a lakeshore presence into the downtown area. c) Economic consequences of the current recession and price sensitivity by both the City and residents that will likely result from the current economic downturn. 20 4. What one or two contributions do you think you would make, in the short term (first few • months) and in the long term (after a year)? To be perfectly candid I'm not sure. That would depend on the issues that come before the commission. I believe that I have no axe to grind — unless the fact that I am an abutter constitutes such an axe —= and I therefore view the role more as being a resource for addressing some of the issues that come before the commission. 5. Please fully disclose any potential conflicts of interest you may have serving on this commission. I am an abutter to the Highlands and as such have a vested interest in the operation of that site. To be eligible, candidates must be available on the interview date as stated in the advertisement. I will certainly do my best, but in the letter /memorandum that I received it stated that the dates for an interview were yet to be determined. Please describe work, volunteer, or life experience that you have had that would prepare you for being a member of this commission. Have been a Mound resident since 2004 and lived in the Lake Minnetonka area since 1994. We live on the Lake and have commons area bordering our property with two common docks and our abutting dock. I am looking at becoming more involved and contributing to the local community in a meaningful way and thought this would be a good start. 2. What skills and abilities do you have that would be helpful in doing the work of this commission? My career has sharpened my skills in technology, sales, consulting, and building business relationships. Have nearly 15 years experience in the computer software business with a deep understanding of web, application, and database systems for companies large and small. Have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota, so can read and understand engineering plans /drawings. This would be in addition to my experience participating in the dock program and enjoying the special lifestyle that Lake Minnetonka gives the surrounding communities. 22 3. With what you know about the Mound area, what do you see as the three most significant issues this commission will need to address in the next two years? a) The Lost Lake Greenway and Pier and surrounding development in downtown Mound b) Ensuring Lake access to Mound residents and leveraging our community's most valued asset, while balancing the impact on home users and the Lake itself. c) Handling dock ordinances, inspections, and any complaints with limited resources/budget. 4. What one or two contributions do you think you would make, in the short term (first few months) and in the long term (after a year)? One idea would be to improve communication between dock users and the dockprogram. For example, simplifying the annual paper -based application process to an online system would reduce clerical paperwork and lower costs which would be added to the current htg z:llmounddocks.com website.
