Attached is a copy of a report from the Public Works Director suggesting the main be moved. Hopefully the cost of moving the main will be available by the September Public Works meeting. -Leohard L. Kopp ~ I ON LAK=' MINNETONKA 5341 MAYWOOD ROAD MOUND, MINNESOTA 55364 INDIAN BURIAL, MOUND~ TELEPHONE (612) 472-1155 September 13, 1977 TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Public Works Director Water Foreman Relocation of water main on Balsam and Spruce Rd. With the proposed storm sewer and road improvement project pending in the Balsam and Spruce Road area, serious consideration should be given to the relocation of the present water main. If you refer to the attached drawing you Can see the problems that could arise. The present six inch main is routed off the street and through the properties at ~52h and 5510 Spruc'e Road. This is one of the oldest mains in Mound, which may present many problems in the future with main breaks. In 1976 we had one on Balsam Road and one on Spruce Road. As my drawing illustrates, there w~s a break in front of ~52h Spruce a few years ago. This break was ddrin9 the summer and caused no damage to the house. Had there been frost in the ground with the main only three feet from the foundation the damage could have been very costly. The homeowners are very concerned and have previously asked that something be done about relocation of this main. My proposal is to relocate a six inch ductile main starting at a point 28' N.W. of the curb box for ~h)4 Spruce Road. It would run from this point 117' to the intersection of Spruce Road then north on Spruce Road for approx- imately 260' to the point of intersection ~ith th~ cast iron six inch main where' it leaves the. properties and returns to the street right of way. I would also recommend the replacement of the fire hydrant at ~510 Spruce Road. The present hydrant is th~ old style with a four inch opening and only 2 - 2½" hose connections. The new hydrant will be a Waterous Pace~ with a five inch opening, two - 2½" and a steamer connection. This w~ll allow the Mack Fire Units to hook up and afford more water for fire protection to the ares. The nearest fire h3drants to this are both two blocks sWSyo Alsl~six inch §ate vslv~ will be ,ced in front of the hydrant for ease~replac{ng any parts without of water availab~lty to the local consumers. I have contacted Widmer Bros. for a prlce on the work and it should be delivered soon. The proceedure will be ms follows: they will di~ 8nd install th%? new water main up to a point of ~ntersection at both ends. The City will haul in the backfill ~nere necessary. We will compact the d~tch with a mmchine furnished by Widmers. H~ will di§ in the water lines from the new main up to the existin§ l~nes to the three homes. We will tap the main and hook up to the existin9 llnes. They will then cut open the old main and tie in the new at each end.. After cuttin§ out the old main we will plu9 the open ends so that the 9round can not settle into them at a later period of time. Re~pectfully, submitted, Robert Shart~ Water Dept. Foreman RS/jcn
